Stinky sink drains are one of the most common complaints we receive from our customers. Odors coming from your sink can make everyday tasks (cooking, cleaning, dish washing, and even teeth brushing) unpleasant. If you’re experiencing a stinky drain, give one of our home remedies a try and leave your kitchen or bathroom smelling pleasant once again.
Clear out the Clogs
Clumps of hair or food can cause a drain to smell unpleasant very quickly. An easy way to remove clogs is by using a plumbing snake or even a straightened-out wire clothes hanger. If the drain itself isn’t clogged, the sink aerator should be checked. The aerator can fill with dirt or bacteria and should be cleaned to reduce bad odors.
Eliminate Sink Odor with Vinegar
Vinegar is a common household product that can be used to kill germs, mold, and bacteria. The unique properties found in this common item can also help rid your sink of unpleasant odors. Simply pour one cup of vinegar down the drain and wait for 30 minutes. After the 30 minutes is up, flush with hot water for several minutes. Who knew such a simple process could eliminate your smelly sink problems?
Check the Overflow Drain
The overflow drain in a sink can hold a small amount of water. If this water becomes stagnant it can cause unpleasant odors. To test this theory, plug the sink and fill it with water. If the sink begins to smell once the water hits the overflow drain, the stagnant water is the issue. This can be resolved by pouring a liquid clog cleaner down the drain.
Install a P-Trap & Check Ventilation
Does your drain smell like rotten eggs? This could be due to sewer gases being trapped by water. A simple solution to this problem is to install a p-trap. A p-trap holds all water in the drain and provides a seal to keep sewer gases from getting into the bathroom. It is also important to make sure the sink is properly vented. Without proper ventilation, gases will bubble up into the drain, even if a p-trap is installed.
